News Local Reader's Digest fraud reported in area     Danielle VandenBrinkBy Danielle VandenBrink, Kingston Whig-Standard Wednesday, November 21, 2012 7:22:45 EST PM   Bookmark and Share When Kingston resident Wayne Offer picked up the phone Tuesday, he knew something wasn't right.The caller claimed to be from Reader's Digest magazine and asked for his wife by name.She was selected as the winner of a contest, the caller said.?All the sudden we were a winner, even though we don't subscribe to Reader's Digest,? said Offer, 66.Detecting a Caribbean accent, Offer said he asked the caller where he was calling from.Although the caller claimed to be from Toronto, the caller ID said otherwise.The number (613) 548-8094) was a local number.When Offer asked for a telephone number to give to his wife, he was given a number ?876-847-0633 ? for Jamaica.After he hung up with the caller, Offer received another call a half hour later.After that, he called the RCMP anti-fraud line.Although he didn't get scammed, Offer said he wanted others to be aware of the attempt.The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can be reached at 1-+1 888-495-8501 or by e-mail at info @ antifraudcentre.ca.Kingston Police are also warning residents about a scam involving a company alleging to have a connection to the Kingston General Hospital.Police said local businesses have been approached by individuals who are attempting to sell something called ?Healing Hands Busy Books,? who distribute activity books for children being treated at the hospital.Police said this information is false, and complaints about the same company have been reported across the country.Police are urging residents to verify the legitimacy of phone calls where people ask for money.The public can verify companies or organizations on the Revenue Canada website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/lstngs/menu-eng.html.danielle.vandenbrink @ sunmedia.catwitter.com/danielleinygk
