I just got a text from (600) 500-0015 stating :call me with my daughter's number on it. I forwarded the text to her and she says she didn't send it. Kind of weird. I've gotten some other ones previously with numbers out of Mississippi and 702 area codes.

i received a text from (600) 500-0015 and it asked me to ca;; 512-454-4731. Well that number per Google belongs to the Austin State School switchboard. Strange!

I got a text very early this morning saying to call "9155440" but ignored it. The weird thing is that the area code for my city is 915. I went ahead and went through my contact lists and found a number that starts as "(915)544-0...". Wish i knew why it did that since i hadn't called that number (pizza place) in a few months.I'm a Cricket customer btw and it's the first time it's ever happened.

Interesting, and long lasting thread. I found it because I got a similar text telling me to call a number which was in my contacts list - but, it was missing a digit in the middle. seconds later my fife called me and asked what was wrong, why I paged her.
It came from (600) 590-1115. I am on boost but I see this is primarily a problem with cricket users. They are both pay as you go or pay up front unlimited planned phone companies. Here is the crazier thing - even though my boost phone rcv'd the message, the number my wife was paged to was my verizon phone... which never got a message. Fluke? The phones were sitting next to each other.
There are a couple of possibilities as to what is going on here.
First, because these phone can generally be purchased for cash and loaded with minutes in cash, this makes them initially fairly untraceable as to who the owner is. Yes, you have to go to the website and fill out into, but you can go thru a proxy or vpn and hide your true IP as well as fill out bogus information. Why mention this? These phones are the backbone of many criminal activities in many nations. This makes this whole situation at least suspect as to what is going on. Somebody is trying to gleam information about something through this network. Analyzing data as to how fast us citizens reply? How willing we are to respond? The scary part is they are using data within our phones to send these messages. They could have hacked the phone thru bluetooth - anytime you are in the public with bluetooth on, it is easy to jack into your phone, encrypted or not. My phone was only a few days old and the bluetooth has never been on. They could also sniff packet data and grab phone numbers and possibly the messages being sent to extract data. Google about the Walmart employee being fired for intercepting texts from a coworkers phone. As long as your on the same tower, not hard to do.
Second, all these phones, and everything else we buy, have chips. Chips that are made in China. It was recently found that a high number of the chips coming out of China have encrypted code in them that when a certain key or code is received, they will do something, but nobody knows what. They were found on a circuit board being replaced on an F18 Hornet and have since been found in computers, cell phones, televisions - anything that has a computer circuit board. This info can be google as well. It could be possible that they are using the cellular network to BETA test the feasibility of activating these chips en mass.
Third... too many other conspiracy possibilities.
Look beyond simply someone harassing, a prank, etc. This is widespread, across multiple networks and countries.
