This is the phone number that will appear from all phone calls made from Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB
This phone line cannot receive phone calls, for privacy reasons the actual phone #s will not appear on the caller ID. Some telephones will not accept phone calls from blocked phone numbers so this is why this phone number is the default # you will see.

Caller: Bell marketing or the HSC

I received a hangup message on my answering machine and looked up the number (204) 775-0055 on the internet.

One hit says it's Bell-MTS (which wouldn't get my business if it were the last phone company on Earth). Another hit brought me to this site. But the hospital has no reason to call me. So which entity — if either — is behind the call?

This is a phone number that comes up when ANY number within HSC calls your phone.  Because of privacy legislation, hospital's direct numbers (including faxes) are blocked for Caller ID purposes.  Imagine if someone who was abused had to make a call from a hospital; people who shouldn't know where they are could then deduce where that person is. Or anyone could figure out why someone was getting a call (and your personal health information is private so nobody can leave details of the call unless they are speaking to the actual person they are trying to reach).  HSC's Caller ID used to say Private Caller but if you have your phone number set to automatically block all Private Caller numbers (which are often telemarketers) then ALL calls from within the hospital won't even ring in people's homes. That would include the clinics, nurses' stations, charitable Foundations, etc.  That would be a nightmare when trying to make or confirm appointments, or reach next of kin.  So HSC has a generic phone number for Caller ID so that outgoing calls will still go through.  So when you see that number it IS an HSC number, but it could be from the General, Children's, Psych Health, Women's, CancerCare, etc.                                   So, answer the call :)

This number is NOT an office at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg; it is a publicly accessible landline. That is probably why some of you are getting phone calls at such odd times and/or when you have no connection with or expectation of hearing from HSC regarding a procedure, test, etc.   I received a call traced back to this number from an erstwhile friend who is hospitalized there now.
