If you owed money to some company and didnt pay, they buy that debt for pennies on the dollar after that company has written it off their books as losses and received a tax break of around 25%(depending on their annual profits). If that debt is over two years old, it is near impossible for anyone to win in court. If you do not plan to pay, do not you say who you are, that you had a debt or give them any information whatsoever. Tell them they can contact that debtor by mail, not to ever call your number and if they do, they will be fined. Do not confirm any information as by doing so will Re-ADMIT and refresh the debt to day one - restarting the clock.
If you have noticed that different collectors have called you for the same debt that is because that 2 year clock ran out on them so they sold it to another creditor for them to continue the only way they will ever collect... harassment.
If you plan to repay the debt, never deal with anyone but the company you have the contract with. If they say they wont deal with you and that you need to deal with the collector, you will then understand that they no longer have the right to collect from you.
Just because a creditor writes off the debt does not mean you do not have the opportunity to pay or settle the debt as they can simply adjust their accounting. By paying a collector, you are only paying for whatever they paid for the debt... pennies on the dollar... and the rest is pure profit. None of it goes back to the creditor.
Those who pay creditors provide them the means to continue the scam.
Pay your bills and it will be far less likely you will be harassed.
If you can not pay your debt, offer to settle it for a less amount. This can also be done through debt consolidation. Depending on the situation, they would prefer to accept 50% from you as they would still be ahead rather than writing off the debt and selling it to collections. Be sure to have it in writing before paying anything.
Get your credit report to see if the debt is listed. All debts listed with Credit Bureaus can be contested and especially if they aged.

I received a call today from this number: male caller very abrupt, asked for the owner of the business, he was told he was out. The man then rudely asked when he would be in. I asked him what company did he represent, he said he was not with a company, and when I asked him his name, he hung up. I reported the number to our telephone service provider.

Received this call just now (1:26pm). Me: Hello? Caller: Can I speak to Mr. (my last name)? Me: Who is calling? Caller: It's Bill Walker Me: What does Bill do? Caller: ........ Me: Well, you called me, dude. What does Bill Walker do? Caller: (plays pre-recorded disconnection tone. I know it was pre-recorded because I could still hear the office in the background as it played, then heard the hang up) Me: Nice, a pre-recorded enh-enh-enh-enh sound! (Hung up)
