Trish

Just got a call from a gal with a real heavy accent claiming they were working under "Government of Canada" and could lower my credit card interest rate.  She claimed to have all my personal information in front of her but couldn't give me my mailing address.  Then she asked for the expiry date of my Visa - when I told her I didn't have a Visa she said "oh..I mean MasterCard"...I told her if she had all my information she would have that, I wasn't giving it to her and was reporting her to MasterCard and hung up.  When I called MasterCard they said it was a pshishing scam that is quite common during the holiday season.

She was pretty quick to give me all her information - her phone number, company Credit Card Consumer Advocacy and her name, Maria.

Dee

Called around noon, left a weird message, did not appear on call list.  Called to find out who was calling and they were asking questions about my credit card number.  Very strange call, I reported it to the police and my credit card company.

I answered because I was expecting a call from a service technician. Caller had a thick Indian accent and asked for us by last name.  Our last name is often mispronounced, but this was so butchered I honestly didn't think he was asking for us.  Then he spelled the last name, and it sounded like ours, but either misspelled or he gave another common last name, and I figured anyone credible actually looking for us would at least be able to read off the spelling of our name correctly.  When I said they must have the wrong number, he proceeded to double check the phone number (which was right, but we've only had this number for 2 months and it's just a security land line so no one really has this number) but when he said, "Is this your postal code?" and read off a postal code from another province (compared to the phone number's area code) that actually sounded like my very first postal code from my first apartment (2 provinces and 12 years ago) I figured this call was either definitely not for us, or someone going off of a mix of cobbled together information from our credit history.  In either case, no one I needed to speak to.When I said no that's not our postal code in a confused (not angry tone), he blurted out, "I'm sorry!" as in (Geez, don't yell at me!)  That made me think that he got a lot of negative responses from people he called, so I was more inclined to think he was a telemarketer or scammer than a legit business call.  He never did say where he was calling from (which I didn't think was weird, since he claimed to be calling for someone that wasn't us, so really he has no business saying where he's calling from to the wrong person as far as I'm concerned).
