GUELPH— Police are warning residents to beware of a recent phone scam where the caller claims to be from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
The number typically shows up on a caller ID as (416) 363-5905, officers said, and the caller identifies themselves as working with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. In the scam, the caller describes an outstanding debt in India that must be settled before an immigration or citizenship hearing. If the debt is not paid, the recipient will be deported the fraudster warns.
The caller will then advise that the debt can be settled but a legal fee in excess of $5,000 must be paid. They may request multiple installments through Money Gram.
Guelph Police are advising residents not to respond to these communications because Citizenship and Immigration Canada does not request payment of debts in other countries through Money Gram.
To verify the authenticity of a call from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, people can contact the organization directly at 1-+1 888-242-2100 from Monday and Friday between 8 a.m., until 4 p.m.
Officers said if anyone has responded to a fraudulent communication and become a victim of fraud, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can be contacted at 1-+1 888-495-8501.

Got a call from the same guy described in all these emails, background noise, accent. Stated he was from Windows and my computer had been hacked. As soon as I said I would have my husband look into it, he hung up. Not rude but obviously sketchy and a scam.

Keep calling me for insurance, they do not give up. What should I do to stop them calling me almost everyday?

These people are incredibly scary. They call all the time and they are VERY aggressive. They get forceful and angry. And it's always something about my computer, they're calling from the IT department. It's an obvious scam. I just get scared by how forceful and aggressive and rude they get. Are there not government regulations on this stuff?? It's one thing to get an email scam but to have a real voice on the other end start yelling at you for not giving them information is scary.

I asked him if you are from Microsoft when did I install 8.1? didn't know, funny thing is don't have a computer right now. He started yelling, telling me to listen, listen!! A little worried the phone number is located in Toronto.

So much for Do Not Call List
Fortunately, my cell didn't ring, so this went right to voice mail. No message was left. What I've done for my outgoing message, is start it with the "This number is no longer in service, disconnected tone". This way, anyone who calls me and it goes to my VM will hear that. My friends and family understand that this is to fake out the marketeers so no problem there.I'm hoping that when their autio dialers pick up the tone, it will erase my cell number from their systems.for my home system, I'm using CallClerk (made in Canada). When a call comes in, it first checks its own database of numbers I've marked as familiar. Then, it checks my Outlook contacts to find a match. If nothing found in either of those, it accesses a website like this one to see if the number has been reported. If unknown, the program will send out the disconnected tone. Before I got this program, I was getting many calls in a week. After a year of use, I'm not getting any calls at all now on the home phone. So CallClerk is working.
