called my cell phone twice within a 30 second span. I didn't recognize number (only a few people know my cell number). Figured it was spam. I see from other posts that it was indeed.

Same just happened to me. Ignoring it... I have no debt! lol
Area code is Windsor Ontario and I am in Toronto. Call display only said 'long distance" - I answered as I was expecting an LD call and the area code was close. They phoned this morning - holiday Monday, with a prerecorded msg about debt consolidation - no indication of the name of the firm. Press 1 for more info or 9 to be removed from their list. I never press these options and simply hung up. Am on DNC list, but that hardly matters.
Consumer alert: Debt reduction companies Beware of “too good to be true offers”
Ottawa, January 10, 2012 – The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) today issued a Consumer Alert on debt reduction companies. FCAC is warning Canadians: Be very cautious about companies that claim they can negotiate a deal with your creditors so that you will have to pay only part of your debt. This process is often called “debt reduction,” “debt settlement,” “debt relief” or “debt negotiation.”
Consumers who are looking for information on dealing with their debt will find tips on getting out of debt on FCAC's website at fcac.gc.ca
