That is actually completely incorrect.  Once an account is assigned for collections, the collection agency gets paid on consignment regardless of who you pay.  The creditor enters into a contract the same way you did when you obtained the credit to begin with.  If the agency does not get paid, the creditor becomes the debtor.Additional myths; Debts are purchased by collection agencies.  If you have a 10 year old MBNA account then yes, it is entirely possible BUT if your account has been sent to collections in the past 5 years, the agency is working on behalf of the original creditor.  No major bank is going to sell off your 10k visa account for pennies on the dollar because you went 180 days in arrears.Collection agencies can settle for whatever they like.  Wrong again!  Because your debt has not been purchased and the agency is working on behalf of the creditors, the creditor sets guidelines in which the agency needs to follow for settlements ie. 80%.  Should you require additional savings, you can apply for what is called a below parameter settlement and in which case you will need to provide financial information such as proof of income, proof of additional debts, assets etc.  The bank/agency are under no obligation to settle any debt.  Remember, you signed a legally binding contract indicating you would pay all monies owed including interest, late penalties, over limit fees etc. Generally speaking, collections will work with you to resolve the issue.  Be decent and honest and they will try to help you.  Yell and name call and you will end up on that nasty auto dialer that calls you 20 times a day!

Short for 'Credit Bureau Of Canada Collections'.  They are located at 1450 Meyerside Dr Unit 7th Flr,  Mississauga, ON L5T 2N5 Tel: (905) 670-7575, Toll Free: +1 800-256-8964. I figure they know so much about us, why not know some information about them. I am a victim in this situation. I let a horrible man into my life. It was like a 20/20 episode you see on TV and you say to yourself how can that woman be so stupid. How could she not have seen that coming. Well, it happened to me. They start by asking very innocent questions by masking them as questions of wanting to get to know you. The next thing you know, they have your mother's maiden name, they somehow found your social insurance number etc. That is all they need. These people know what is required to get CREDIT under your name. All they have to do is do it from your home phone. One day when your not home, they simply get another girl to pretend to be you and voila! They have a credit card in their name under your account. To make the abuse even more degrading, they even change the mailing address and phone number so that you don't even know it happened until it is too late.  As for the credit bureaus afterwards, no matter how many times you try to explain, they don't care. They have a job to do. Quota's to fill. You pay for that phone line yet you don't seem to have any rights to it. Worse, if it is a cell phone, you get charged every single time. It is a viscous cycle with no answer in sight.
