Same deal. I live within the area that is not long distance for the 416 area code. (Toronto)The robot claims that "the government" has provided a relief mechanism for those with $10k or more of credit card debt.I pressed "1" to speak with a rep and as soon as the person realized that I wanted to know "what government" they hung up.

"Debt reduction" scamAn Open Letter to Those Who Work in Outbound Call CentresI understand that you are probably just trying to earn a living.  However, I want you to know the impact your calls have on people's lives.  Here are some questions to ask yourself:1. Do you realise that your employer may be engaged in illegal activities?  How do you feel about this?2. Do you realise that some of us work at home and require long stretches of uninterrupted time to concentrate on our work?  When you call, even if the phone just rings or the machine kicks in audibly, you are interrupting many such people.  You are also interrupting many sick children and elderly people who badly need rest.  You may ask, "Why don't they just turn off the phone?"  Well, imagine that you are extremely sick and awaiting an important call from your doctor.  You wouldn't "just turn off the phone."  You might wonder, "Why don't you put your number on the "do not call list?"  Many of us are on the so-called "do not call list" and yet we still receive such calls.  Ask yourself this - if you found out your employer does not respect this legally binding list, what would you do about it?3. Do you realise that your time is your very life?  You are wasting your own life as well as chunks of the lives of those you call, all so that you can be paid next to no money for your time (i.e., life) by an employer who is probably raking in a large amount of money at your expense.4. Do you feel like you are making an honest contribution to society when you tell someone they have "won a cruise" or that you are going to "lower their credit card debt?"  Even if there are loopholes in the law which make some of these scams legal, they are still just that - scams.  How do you feel about working for someone dishonest and helping them rip off vulnerable people?5. Do your realise that you won't starve if you quit your job?  If you have any respect for yourself or other people, please, please, please stop what you are doing.  If enough people refuse to do this kind of work, the world will be a better place.  We will have peaceful homes where we can work or relax without unwanted interruption, and the scam artists will have to figure out a new way to rip people off without your help!  Please quit now.  Something better will come along for you.  It may take awhile, but if you have the courage to quit now, something better will come along that much sooner!
